So, you want to learn about car insurance and whether it covers you for stuff like this? Good idea because if you want to drive a car in Canada, the law says there's a minimum amount of standard coverage in each province that you need to have.
Car insurance, it's an agreement between you and a provider, like TD Insurance. You pay a monthly fee called a premium, and they cover the cost of things that can occur in an accident, like damages to your car or property damage to say that gaudy boxwood hedge that your neighbour planted way too close to your driveway.
Car insurance may cover those costs so you worry less about something going wrong with your vehicle, and more about something going right with your neighbour's lawn decor.

When you rent a car, does your own car insurance cover damage to it? It depends on what type of coverage you have. If you only have basic coverage called liability coverage, then physical damage to, or a loss of the vehicle, won't be covered. If your existing policy includes collision or upset coverage, then physical damage to, or loss of the vehicle could be covered. Either way, my recommendation is, don't lose your car, because that is so inconvenient. Now, if you want to be extra prepared, TD Insurance offers an exclusive out on called the Grand Touring Solution. As the name implies, it's pretty grand. You and anyone under your policy, may be covered for damage to rental vehicles anywhere in Canada and the US. Plus, you'll be reimbursed for emergency roadside service. If this doesn't have you cruising with confidence in your next rental car, I don't know what will.

If you're watching this, you're probably wondering what factors affect your car insurance premium.
So first things first.
What's a premium?
It's how much you pay
Things that can affect your premium include your driving record and this, and this, and this, and this, and this.
And then there's a deductible.
What is this deductible you ask?
It's the amount you'll be required to pay out of pocket if you make a claim.
So let's say your deductible is $1,000.
If the total bill of, say, a damaged repair claim is $3,200, your provider pays $2,200 and you pay the $1,000 deductible.
The higher your deductible, the lower your premium could be and vice versa.

Melanie: Good morning and welcome back. You are watching Breakfast Television. Happy Friday to you. In case you didn’t know April is Earth month and whether you’re looking to save money on gas or you want to be more environmentally friendly, an electric vehicle may be the perfect way to start. So here to break down what you need to know when it comes to EV insurance is Bruno Jauernig, Vice President at TD Insurance. Good morning to you.
Bruno: Good morning.
Melanie: There is such an interest right now in that whole EV-hybrid realm. Can you talk a little bit about what you’ve seen from a coverage standpoint on what people are saying. How many people are rushing toward you?
Bruno: Yeah, I mean, EVs and hybrids, um you know, they can’t make them fast enough these days and they’re hard to find, so we’ve seen that the number of our customers who are looking for EVs and hybrids is doubled over the last couple of years. So we’re excited to see that. But we’re also seeing more and more questions come from our customers on EVs and what they should be aware of as it relates to EVs in general and insurance.
Melanie: Very good. Okay, so people are looking for the EVs, they’re looking for the hybrids, but at the same time they’re saying what does it mean for me when it comes to coverage? So what should they be aware of?
Bruno: Yeah, well the great thing is EVs and hybrids really it’s the exact same process and it’s the exact same coverage that you get so if you’ve ever gone through an auto insurance policy purchase, you’d be very very familiar with the process. At TD though, we’re really big fans of the environment and really big fans of EVs, so we do offer a few extra things, specifically for EV and hybrid drivers. We have a greenwill discount so you can save 5% off your insurance rates just by driving an EV or a hybrid vehicle, and the great thing is that’s combinable with other discounts. So if you bought your insurance policy online and save 10% you can add this in and for 15% savings right off the top which is really really great.
Melanie: You just said a ‘ding ding ding’ word that people like hearing and that is savings. Every penny counts these days, right?
Bruno: Absolutely
Melanie: It’s very difficult for many people’s wallets. Let’s talk about this. The unfortunate scenario where let’s say you drive an EV and you get into an accident, things happen. What is that process like then when it comes to your insurance?
Bruno: Well, getting into an accident is never a great experience. The thing to keep in mind with EVs is not all repair shops are equipped to properly repair EVs, so you do need to check into that in advance. A big question about repairs is actually the battery, because the battery is such an integral and expensive part of the vehicle, so at TD Insurance we will replace that battery if it’s not repairable. We also have our network of auto centres, so again, getting into an accident and the stress of the accident claim is a tough experience. We offer a one-stop-shop where you can talk to an advisor, get a rental vehicle and get your car repaired all in one place. And we’ll even try to get you into an EV rental if your EV is in for repairs, which is great. Our auto shops are certified by a wide range of OEM manufacturers, including some of the EV manufacturers like Tesla, so you can really rest assured that you’re well covered.

Sid: Welcome back to breakfast television Sid Seixeiro here with you 743 on a monday. So according to the Financial post, Ontario's car theft rates have exponentially increased by 86% in the last few years, leaving car owners deeply worried. There are many ways you can protect yourself from the impact of car theft. There are things you can do. Here to tell us more is VP of TD Insurance Fraud Farrukh Hussein.
Sid: Farrukh Good morning. Welcome to the show.
Farrukh: Morning, Sid. How are you?
Sid: I'm good. I'm good. Boy, is this in the news right now and a lot of people are worried about it. Just generally, how would you describe car theft right now in this province and how it's affecting people? Farrukh: You know? Sid You already mentioned car thefts are up significantly. It's a real issue and criminals are stealing these vehicles to make money by either exporting them for sale or they're also fraudulently changing the identity of the car and selling them domestically to unsuspecting Canadians. This is a national issue. However, Ontario is the hardest hit province. In the first half of 2023, car thefts in Ontario were up 31% of a record high that was already hit in 2022. So car thefts can happen to anyone at any time. However, there are some precautions you can take to protect your car against theft and also having the right insurance policy will ensure that you reduce and or eliminate any financial impact in the unfortunate event your car is stolen.
Sid: Okay, So let's let's talk about the ways to minimize the impact here, because it's it'll change your life like that. And obviously it's a pretty major thing. Our insurance policy. How does that protect you first?
Farrukh: First, you know, it's really important for you to understand what you're covered for right now in your policy. So contact your insurance and figure that out. Because if you opt in for one of the following three optional coverages, be it comprehensive, be it specified perils or all perils, you will have protection against auto theft. And depending on which coverage you have, you may also be covered for rental cars if your car is stolen. So really important to figure out what you're covered for in your existing coverage. And if you need more information to understand how optional coverages can protect you, you can contact TD Insurance or visit us at TD Insurance dot com.
Sid: So what are the other ways in which people can protect themselves and like, I know you're going to go through a bunch of stuff that some people might think are obvious, but you would be stunned at how often these normal things do not happen in people's daily lives. Please, Farrukh, go down the list. Farrukh: Yeah, there's actually a lot you can do.
Sid: Seriously.
Farrukh: Some of the basics out. Lock your car. Triple check that it's locked. Never keep your car running unattended.
Sid: Can you say that one again please?
Farrukh: Yeah, and triple check that it's locked properly.
Sid: Yeah. And leave your car unattended while it's running. Thing. Yeah. I can't believe we have to say that out loud with humans watching the show. But we do, because sometimes it happens. Please continue.
Farrukh: If you have a garage, please park your car in the garage. Also consider, you know, always keeping the exterior of your home lit. So if there are any uninvited visitors, they're seen. You might also consider installing cameras on the exterior of your home, which can act as a deterrent. Sid: That we're going to. Farrukh: Do. Now, on top of those basics, though, it's if you have a professionally installed anti-theft tracking device now, that will track your car real time if it's ever stolen. So what that does is it acts as a deterrent for criminals. But even more importantly, if it's stolen, it drastically increases the chances of recovery. If you're a TD insurance customer in Ontario with a professionally installed anti-theft tracking device, you may be eligible for a 15% discount on your theft related coverage. Sid: So we got about 90 seconds left. Your car has been stolen. It happened to you. It's never happened before. What do you do?
Farrukh: First thing, contact your local police station. File a report, jot their report number down, because the next thing you have to do is contact your insurer, start a claim where are you going to have to give the police report number. And if your insurance customer, you can immediately start your claim on the TD insurance app, where you can track the progress of your claim easily and conveniently right on your phone.

SO, YOUR CAR REPAIRS OR REPLACEMENT, SHOULD YOU BE IN AN ACCIDENT; DAMAGE TO PERSONAL PROPERTY, SHOULD THAT HAPPEN; PERSONAL INJURY AS WELL SO IF YOU'RE INJURED OR YOUR PASSENGERS ARE INJURED; COST OF MEDICAL CARE AND REHABILITATION IS COVERED AND OF COURSE AUTO THEFT, WHICH IS BECOMING MUCH MORE OF AN ISSUE IF YOUR CAR IS STOLEN THE COST OF REPLACEMENT IS ALSO COVERED.

Bruno: DOZENS AND DOZENS OF FACTORS. SOME VERY COMPLICATED MATHEMATICAL EQUATIONS, BUT SOME OF THE MAJOR THINGS INCLUDE YOUR CAR ITSELF. THE YEAR, THE MODEL, THE MAKE, OF COURSE. EVEN THE OPTIONS YOU CHOOSE ON YOUR VEHICLE COULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE ESTIMATED COST OF REPLACEMENT OR REPAIR.

Sid: SO, INSURANCE RATES ARE GOING UP, YOU MENTIONED THEFT. BUT THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS WHY THE NUMBER IS RISING. WHERE ELSE DO YOU WANT TO GO WITH THAT?

WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING READY TO LEAVE YOUR HOUSE AFTER A SNOWSTORM, LET'S MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE CLEARING OUR CAR COMPLETELY. THAT'S ALL ICE, ALL SNOW, AND DON'T FORGET YOUR ROOF.
