What is the difference between single-trip and annual travel insurance?

Whether you’re exploring iconic cities or visiting family living abroad, with a travel medical emergency insurance plan, you can get coverage for eligible medical expenses. You could also get coverage for some eligible out of pocket expenses (such as meals, accommodation, or transportation expenses) that may occur in connection with an emergency while you’re on vacation outside of your home province or territory of residence.

Let's start by uncovering what a single-trip and annual travel insurance plan mean and what are some of the differences between both the plans.

What is single-trip travel insurance?

A single-trip travel insurance plan covers eligible emergency medical expenses for one trip outside of your home province or territory - coverage begins on your date of your departure and ends on the date you return. This type of travel insurance may be a good fit if you’re looking for emergency medical coverage for a one-time trip. You may even be able to purchase a top-up or extension insurance for extra coverage days if you need to extend your initial trip length.

What is annual or multi-trip travel insurance?

An annual medical travel insurance or multi-trip medical plan, provides coverage for several trips taken outside of your home province or territory within a 12-month period. The plan provides coverage per trip up to a chosen maximum number of days, which means if your particular trip extends further than the expected return date you will not be covered by the plan for the additional days unless you decide to top-up or extend the existing policy. If you are planning multiple trips over a 12-month period, you can consider an annual travel insurance plan.

Single-trip insurance

Annual travel insurance

Who should consider this plan?

Suitable for a one-time trip, for example, if you are travelling for a special occasion, business trip or a one-off vacation.

Ideal for frequent travellers, such as numerous out-of-province trips, short getaways, or multiple business trips throughout the year.

How long does this plan cover?

Starts when you leave on your trip and ends when you return. The plan length available usually depends on the maximum number of days allowed under your government health insurance plan and may cover up to 365 days. Make sure to confirm the requirements with your insurer.

Starts on the date you choose. However, each covered trip has a maximum number of coverage days. This maximum depends on your policy. If your trip duration exceeds this number, you will not be covered for those extra days of your trip.

You could be eligible to apply for top-up coverage if your trip extends longer than the duration you originally chose.

Is this plan cost-effective?

Usually, costs less than an annual trip insurance plan if you are only planning to insure one trip during the year. However, if you plan to insure more than one trip, an annual trip coverage may be more cost-effective and convenient.

Can be more cost-effective than buying a single-trip insurance plan if you are planning to insure multiple trips during the year.
